EACC Arrests NAWASCO Official For Forged Academic Certificate And Misappropriation Of Public Funds

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has arrested Edwin Amagola Munyeti, an employee at Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company (NAWASCO), on charges of using a forged academic certificate to secure a job and unlawfully siphoning over KSh9 million in public funds.

According to an EACC statement released on Monday, May 12, Munyeti is accused of submitting a fraudulent Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) certificate, allegedly issued by the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC), to gain employment at NAWASCO.

The investigation revealed that Munyeti had been employed at NAWASCO for almost 14 years, from March 2010 to December 2023, during which he was paid Sh9,080,267 in salary from public funds.

The EACC has forwarded the case to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), which has approved multiple charges against Munyeti, including forgery, deceiving a principal, and fraudulent acquisition of public property.

Munyeti was processed at the EACC’s Integrity Centre in Nairobi and is expected to be arraigned in court on Tuesday, May 13, 2025, for plea taking.

The EACC also reminded individuals with foreign qualifications intending to register with institutions offering KNEC examinations that they must first obtain an equivalence certificate from KNEC before proceeding with their registration.

If the certificates are in a language other than English or Kiswahili, they must be translated by the relevant embassy, Alliance Francaise for French, or another recognised institution.

“The certificates provided for equivalence must be verified by the relevant examining body that issued them,” KNEC stated.

Verification results must be sent directly from the examining body to the Chief Executive Officer of KNEC via email at ceo@knec.ac.ke.

“Processing of the equivalence will only commence once this verification is received,” KNEC added.

NAWASCO, established in December 2003, is a fully owned subsidiary of Nairobi City County, responsible for providing water and sewerage services within Nairobi.

The company is committed to ensuring the delivery of clean water and efficient sewerage services in a sustainable and regulated manner.
