22 Students Injured As Dormitory Fire Guts Amabuko Secondary School In Kisii

A fire broke out on Sunday night at Amabuko Secondary School in Nyaribari Masaba Constituency, Kisii County, destroying property of unknown value and leaving 22 students with minor injuries.

The incident occurred at around 8:00 PM, sending panic through the school as students fled the flames engulfing one of the dormitories.

Witnesses described a chaotic scene, with students screaming and scrambling for safety as the fire rapidly spread through the building.

Responding swiftly to the distress call, Ichuni Ward MCA Wycliffe Siocha confirmed that the injured students were promptly rushed to Keroka General Hospital, where they are currently receiving treatment.

“We have had a fire accident at Amabuko Secondary School in my ward. I am grateful that we never lost any students in this incident.

A total of 22 students sustained minor injuries, and all of them are currently being attended to at Keroka General Hospital,” said Siocha.

The cause of the fire remains unknown, and investigations are underway to determine what triggered the blaze.

Emergency fire services were deployed to the scene and helped contain the flames, preventing further destruction.

“I extend my appreciation to all those who helped put out the fire.

I managed to visit the school, assess the damage, and assist in taking the injured to the hospital. I wish the injured a speedy recovery,” added Siocha.

According to police reports, the dormitory affected in the incident housed 70 students, all of whom managed to evacuate before the structure was consumed by fire.

This is not the first time Amabuko Secondary has suffered such a tragedy.

In November 2021, two separate dormitory fires were reported one at Amabuko Mixed Day Secondary School and another at Nyabigena Boys High School, both in Kisii County.

The latest fire also follows another dormitory blaze that occurred less than two weeks ago at Igikiro Boys High School in Makuyu, Murang’a County, on May 10, where property was destroyed though no students were injured.

Authorities later arrested three students suspected of involvement in that incident.

As fire-related incidents in schools continue to rise, education and security stakeholders are calling for improved safety measures, including installation of fire alarms, regular drills, and enhanced surveillance to prevent future tragedies.
