Born on December 28, 1987, in Nairobi, Kenya, Bien is a dynamic performer and prolific songwriter. He has become a central figure in African contemporary music, celebrated for his distinctive voice, lyrical depth, and commitment to both artistic and social integrity.
Education and Early Career
Bien studied Journalism and Media Studies at the United States International University-Africa (USIU-A), graduating in 2011. While still a student, he co-founded Sauti Sol alongside Polycarp Otieno, Willis Chimano, and Savara Mudigi. The group quickly rose to fame for their fusion of Afro-pop, R&B, and traditional Kenyan influences.

Rise with Sauti Sol
As Sauti Sol’s lead vocalist and primary songwriter, Bien played a central role in shaping the band’s unique sound and creative vision. Their debut album, Mwanzo (2008), followed by Sol Filosofia (2011), helped establish a loyal pan-African fanbase with music that blended soulful melodies and socially conscious lyrics.
Sauti Sol went on to become one of Africa’s most celebrated music acts, winning numerous awards and collaborating with international artists. In 2021, Bien earned a Grammy Award as a songwriter for his contribution to Burna Boy’s album Twice As Tall, which won Best Global Music Album.

His solo work expanded his reach across Africa and Europe. Bien embarked on a successful European tour and was named Spotify’s most-streamed Kenyan artist in 2024. In 2025, he received the Trace Music Award for Best East African Artist, affirming his continued relevance on the global music stage.

In addition to his music career, Bien is an active entrepreneur. He co-founded Sol Generation Records, a label dedicated to nurturing emerging African musical talent. He is also involved in several ventures including Hustle Sasa (a platform empowering creatives), Sol Kids (a children’s music and entertainment initiative), and Manhattan Ke Bar & Grill, a popular spot in Nairobi.
