Outrage as Harambee Stars is kicked out of hotel after exit from CHAN


Kenyans on social media are an irate lot after learning Harambee Stars’ players had been ordered to check out of their hotel rooms after being bundled out of the 2024 CHAN.

Taking to different social media platforms, a section of Kenyans called out Federation Of Kenya Football (FKF) for being cruel to the team even after flying the country’s flag up higher in CHAN.

According to football commentator Ole Teya, the players were asked to leave the hotel following their loss to Madagascar in the CHAN quarterfinals played at the Moi International Sports Center, Kasarani on Friday, August 22, 2025.

In a tweet sighted by Nairobi News, Teya disclosed that the communication was passed to Harambee Stars’ players by FKF president Hussein Mohammed.

The players were ordered to check out on Sunday, August 24, 2025.

In a meeting with FKF president Hussein Mohammed on the morning of Saturday, August 23, the players inquired whether they would receive a share of the Sh 58.2 million prize money Kenya earned from CAF for reaching the CHAN quarterfinals.

The FKF president reminded them that the federation played a key role in securing the hefty bonuses already awarded by President William Ruto.

Hussein added that FKF would communicate its position on the CAF funds once the money is credited to its account.

Kenyans React

This infuriated many Kenyans who held Harambee Stars’ players should have been handled with dignity, especially after representing Kenya well in CHAN.

The latest turn of events unfolded just hours after Harambee Stars lost to Madagascar in the CHAN quarterfinals.

The game ended on a 1-1 draw leading to penalty shootouts.

Madagascar scored four goals while Harambee Stars scored three goals.
