The National Police Service (NPS) has reported the recovery of an AK-47 rifle during an operation to thwart a kidnapping attempt involving a 16-year-old girl in Turkana County.
Officers from Lorugum Police Station responded to a tip-off from local residents about a disturbance at a home in Kaapus Location.
An armed man had reportedly stormed the residence and attempted to forcibly abduct the teenage girl.
Upon arrival, police—led by the station’s Officer Commanding Station (OCS) found the suspect had fled the scene.
However, they successfully recovered an AK-47 rifle at the location. According to an NPS report issued Monday, the weapon was found with six rounds of ammunition and one spent cartridge. The firearm has been secured as evidence.
A manhunt is currently underway to locate and arrest the suspect, who will face charges in court once apprehended.
In its statement, the NPS thanked members of the public for their prompt action and urged continued cooperation with law enforcement agencies.
“The National Police Service commends members of the public for their unwavering cooperation with security agencies and urges them to continue sharing information at their nearest police post or station,” the statement read.
This incident follows the recovery of another illegal firearm just a day earlier in the Kabetwa area of Tot, Elgeyo Marakwet County.
In that operation, a multi-agency security team seized a weapon from a suspected bandit during an intelligence-led raid.
Authorities recovered the firearm along with 12 rounds of ammunition, two magazines, and a smoke jacket. The suspect was immediately taken into custody and is awaiting arraignment.
