Chaos Erupts at Kasarani as Gor Mahia Fans Clash with Police Before KPL Opener

Tense scenes unfolded at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, on Sunday as police clashed with football fans ahead of a Kenya Premier League (KPL) match between Gor Mahia and Bidco United.

According to eyewitness accounts and footage obtained by media, the chaos began when a group of Gor Mahia supporters attempted to force their way into the stadium without valid tickets.

Several fans, dressed in the club’s signature green jerseys, were seen scaling the perimeter fence near the outer gate in broad daylight.

The fans proceeded toward the stadium’s main entrance, where they were met by police officers who tried to disperse them using teargas.

The confrontation quickly escalated into running battles, with parts of the stadium compound engulfed in smoke as fans scattered for safety while police gave chase.

It remains unclear why the fans were initially denied entry, though speculation suggests that a large number of them sought to watch the match without purchasing tickets.

A spot-check revealed that ticket prices were set at sh300 for regular entry and sh1,000 for VIP access.

Gor Mahia, one of Kenya’s most decorated football clubs, is known for its passionate fan base. However, the club’s supporters have been involved in several incidents of unrest in recent months.

In June 2025, chaos broke out at the Ulinzi Sports Complex during the Mozzart Bet Cup Final, where police were once again forced to use teargas to disperse rowdy Gor Mahia fans following a 2-1 loss to Nairobi United.

Earlier, in May, multiple fans sustained injuries after a stampede erupted at Gusii Stadium before a high-profile match between Gor Mahia and Shabana FC.

Sunday’s unrest comes amid heightened anticipation among fans eager to assess the club’s new season prospects after Gor Mahia lost the 2024/2025 league title to Police FC. Many had hoped to get an early look at the team’s performance in their opening match.

Authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the incident, including whether any arrests or injuries were reported.
