Uber announced a special Earner Appreciation Event as part of its 10-year anniversary celebrations in Kenya, recognising and celebrating the drivers who power the platform and move the country forward.
The event, themed around empowerment and community, brought together top-rated earners for the Uber Kenya Empowerment Awards, which honoured individuals who have demonstrated exceptional service and dedication.
Honourees included longest-serving drivers, community champions, and highest-rated drivers.
Stories of resilience and innovation from these earners reflected the platform’s impact in Kenya as more than just an app, but as a partner in creating livelihoods and opportunities.
“Our commitment to Kenya is about more than just mobility and delivery; it’s about building a partnership for shared prosperity, ” said Imran Manji, General Manager for Uber East Africa.
“Today, we are proud to honour the hard work of our earners.
Their success is a testament to the entrepreneurial spirit that fuels Kenya’s economic growth.”
New Initiatives to Support Earners
As part of its commitment to supporting earners, Uber unveiled a series of new initiatives designed to make a tangible difference in the daily lives of drivers and couriers.
Through a new partnership with TotalEnergies, drivers will benefit from discounted fuel, helping to ease one of their largest everyday costs and boosting their overall earnings.
A continued collaboration with Safaricom will drive seamless connectivity through the “No Bundles, No Problem” campaign.
This initiative ensures that both drivers and riders can access the Uber app without using up their personal data balance when on the Safaricom network, keeping trips moving smoothly without interruption.
Uber also announced a new program focused on driver health and wellbeing. In partnership with Vision Spring, drivers and couriers will now have access to free eye tests and free eyeglasses.
By investing in eye health, Uber is reinforcing its commitment to safety, ensuring drivers can see clearly on the road and provide safer trips for all.
In addition, Uber celebrated its top-rated drivers, recognising their hard work and dedication with special earning incentives.
This recognition underscores Uber’s ongoing commitment to rewarding quality service and strengthening relationships with its most trusted earners.
Economic Impact and Community Transformation Uber’s impact in Kenya over the last decade has been significant.
According to the 2023 Impact Report, drivers who use the platform earned 37 percent more than their next best alternative, collectively taking home an additional Sh2.2 billion in income annually.
The platform also generated Sh14.1 billion in economic value, with many partners leveraging their earnings to build businesses and transform their families’ futures.
This demonstrates how flexible earning opportunities create ripple effects across families and communities as shared by one driver.
“Through my Uber earnings, I was able to start a shop that my wife and I run together. It gave us another stream of income and changed our family’s future.”
Simplifying Tax Compliance In a move to simplify tax compliance for drivers, the company recently announced an initiative to issue electronic tax invoices (e-TIMS) on behalf of its drivers.
This partnership with the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) automates the process of generating and transmitting e-invoices, which were previously a manual and time-consuming task.
This initiative helps drivers easily comply with new regulations, streamlining their financial records and making it simpler to file returns.
A Decade of Innovation and Empowerment Since arriving in Nairobi in 2015, Uber has completed millions of trips, empowered thousands of earners, and contributed billions to the Kenyan economy.
A decade later, the company remains focused on innovation, empowerment, and building opportunities for all.
