Drama at Kisii law courts as fake lawyer arrested during hearing

Court proceedings at the Kisii Law Courts on Thursday, October 30, took an unexpected turn amid an ongoing crackdown on fake lawyers operating in the county.

The drama unfolded during a plea hearing for three suspects who had been arrested in Kisii town for allegedly posing as advocates and offering legal services to unsuspecting clients at cybercafes.

In a twist, one of the suspects was represented by another unqualified individual, identified as Peter Ngeri Ouma.

During a heated exchange with the prosecution, Ouma admitted that he did not possess a valid Certificate of Practice, claiming he had only applied for one.

His admission prompted Senior Principal Magistrate Benard Omwansa to order police officers in the courtroom to eject Ouma and have him record a statement explaining why he was representing clients without proper accreditation.

“(To the police officers) You can take care of him (Ngeri) as he records a statement and the investigations to follow. In other words, you don’t have the audience without the certificate,” Magistrate Omwansa ruled.

The three accused were later released on a sh.50,000 bond each, with the case set for mention on November 13, 2025.

The prosecution team, working in collaboration with the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) Kisii Branch, vowed to intensify the crackdown on impostors posing as advocates.

“We are appealing to the public to remain vigilant. These masqueraders are not only operating in cybercafes but also collecting money and damaging the reputation of genuine judicial officers,” the LSK said in a statement.
