TikTok has suspended late-night LIVE access for millions of users in Nigeria, a drastic move triggered by an explosive rise in explicit broadcasts and other forms of adult content dominating the platform after dark.
The company issued an in-app alert announcing that all LIVE activity, both streaming and viewing, is now blocked between 11PM and 5AM (Nigerian time).
As the policy took effect, creators across the country reported their LIVE buttons turning grey, displaying the message “No Access” whenever they attempted to go on air during the restricted hours.
TikTok says the measure is temporary, but necessary as the platform reassesses its safety systems amid growing concerns over monetised sexual content, risky behaviour, and predatory interactions unfolding on Nigerian LIVE streams.
While the company did not reveal when the ban will be lifted, it emphasized that the review is urgently needed to “preserve community integrity.”

The clampdown follows months of warnings from digital-rights groups, parents, and content-moderation analysts who flagged Nigeria as a growing hotspot for unsafe, unregulated LIVE activity.
Many adult-themed streams, often masked as “talent shows” or “late-night hangouts”, reportedly attracted large audiences and generated significant gift-based revenue for participating creators.
Data from TikTok’s 2025 transparency report underscores the severity of the issue.
In the second quarter of 2025, the platform banned over 49,000 Nigerian LIVE sessions for violating monetization rules and community guidelines, one of the highest enforcement figures recorded globally for that period.
Nigeria has rapidly become one of TikTok’s most challenging markets to moderate, with user activity skyrocketing in recent years.
The company says it removed more than 3.6 million videos created by Nigerian users for various guideline breaches.
A substantial portion of those removals were linked to explicit sexual content, endangerment of minors, and coordinated attempts to exploit LIVE gifting for adult-themed performances.
Digital-safety experts note that the late-night window, when adult viewership tends to peak, has been the most difficult period for TikTok moderators to police in real time.
By shutting down LIVE access during these hours, TikTok hopes to break the cycle of repeat offenders who exploit the platform’s monetisation tools.

While the suspension has sparked mixed reactions, with some creators accusing TikTok of penalizing innocent users, others say the move was long overdue.
Many parents and youth advocates have welcomed the restriction, arguing that it provides a much-needed buffer as the platform grapples with the expanding scale of harmful content in the region.
For now, creators will have to adjust to the new reality as TikTok continues its safety overhaul.
But until the company finalizes its review, late-night LIVEs in Nigeria remain completely blacked out, marking one of the most aggressive enforcement steps the platform has taken in the country.
