Tanya Plibersek has had a long and sustained career within the Australian Labor Party (ALP), beginning with active involvement at the party’s organizational level in New South Wales. She was a member of the ALP Rosebery Branch and served on the NSW Status of Women Committee between 1994 and 1998. She also served on the NSW Economics Committee from 1996 to 1998. From 1996 to 2004, she was a delegate to the ALP State Conference. 

In 1998, she entered the House of Representatives as the Member for Sydney, a position she has held continuously through successive re-elections from 2001 to 2025. During her parliamentary career, she has served on a wide range of House and Joint Committees, including Economics, Finance and Public Administration; Privileges; Education and Training; Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade; Public Accounts and Audit (including as Deputy Chair); and Intelligence and Security.

She entered executive government following the election of the Rudd Government in 2007. She held ministerial portfolios that included Housing and the Status of Women from 2007 to 2010. During this time, she also served as Minister for Human Services and Minister for Social Inclusion between 2010 and 2011. Afterwards, she became the appointed Minister for Health from 2011 to 2013.

She was also a Cabinet Minister during this period and later held the role of Minister for Health and Medical Research in 2013. After Labor returned to government in 2022, she re-entered Cabinet and served as Minister for the Environment and Water from June 2022 until May 2025, before being appointed Minister for Social Services.
