Mombasa welcomes national deal to secure cancer treatment equipment at Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital
Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir has lauded the administration of William Ruto for signing key agreements aimed at securing the long-term operation and maintenance of cancer treatment equipment in regional facilities.
The governor specifically thanked the Ministry of Health under Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale for facilitating the signing of Intergovernmental Participation Agreements (IPAs) and a Service Level Agreement (SLA). The agreements will guarantee sustained functionality of Linear Accelerators (LINACs) at Kenya’s Regional Cancer Centres in Mombasa, Nakuru and Garissa.
For Mombasa County, the move marks a significant milestone. The Regional Cancer Centre at Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital serves patients from across the Coastal region and beyond.

Governor Nassir noted that ensuring consistent uptime of the highly specialized radiotherapy equipment will lead to more timely treatment, reduce referrals to Nairobi, and improve survival outcomes for cancer patients.
He said the agreement reflects the constitutional principle of cooperation between national and county governments in delivering essential health services.
The governor reaffirmed Mombasa’s commitment to strengthening specialized healthcare services, emphasizing that no family should be forced to travel long distances or endure delays in accessing life-saving cancer treatment.
