NTSA urges drivers to ensure all passengers wear seat belts to reduce road accidents

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has urged drivers across the country to ensure that all passengers wear seat belts while travelling, emphasizing that the responsibility lies primarily with the driver.

In a road safety advisory issued on Thursday, the authority reminded motorists that they have the authority and responsibility to ensure that every person in their vehicle whether seated in the front or the back fastens their seat belt before the journey begins.

“As drivers, you have the power and authority to ensure everyone travelling with you belts up,” NTSA said in the statement. “Every time, every trip, everybody must belt up.”

The road safety agency noted that wearing a seat belt significantly reduces the risk of serious injuries or death in the event of a road crash.

NTSA warned that failure to comply with seat belt regulations remains one of the key contributors to fatalities and severe injuries on Kenyan roads.

According to NTSA, drivers should always remind passengers to fasten their seat belts and should not begin a trip until everyone inside the vehicle is properly secured.

“Drivers must ensure that passengers both in the front and rear seats wear their seat belts throughout the journey,” the authority said.

NTSA also urged public service vehicle (PSV) operators to strictly enforce the rule among passengers, particularly during long-distance travel, as part of broader efforts to enhance road safety.

The authority reiterated its commitment to promoting responsible driving habits and enforcing traffic regulations to reduce accidents and save lives on Kenyan roads.
