President William Ruto has vowed to shield The Nairobi Hospital from what he termed as “charlatans, conmen and fraudsters,” amid ongoing concerns over the facility’s governance and management.
Speaking in Mount Elgon, the Head of State said he had been approached by senior doctors and professionals seeking intervention to safeguard the hospital from individuals allegedly attempting to take control of the institution.
“Let me say from here in Mount Elgon, as President of the Republic of Kenya and patron of Nairobi Hospital, senior doctors and professionals approached me to save the hospital from conmen, fraudsters and charlatans who wanted to expropriate it,” Ruto said.
The President emphasized that the hospital remains a critical medical institution not only in Kenya but across the region.
“Nairobi Hospital is a premier medical institution in the Republic of Kenya. In fact, it serves the region. There is no way I am going to allow it to be taken hostage by charlatans, conmen and fraudsters,” he stated.
Ruto said he had issued firm instructions for action to be taken against individuals implicated in alleged malpractice at the hospital.
“I have instructed with clarity that all those involved in fraudulent activities at Nairobi Hospital will be removed, taken to court and charged,” he said, adding that the facility must continue serving Kenyans effectively.
The President also took a swipe at his political opponents, accusing them of politicising the matter.
“I want to tell the opposition to find something else to do. Leave Nairobi Hospital alone. You do not understand what is happening there,” he said.
He reassured Kenyans that the government will not allow the institution to collapse or fall into the wrong hands.
“We are going to stand by Nairobi Hospital. It is an institution that serves the people of Kenya, and we will protect its right to exist. We will stop at nothing until it remains the premier hospital in the country,” Ruto added.
His remarks come amid heightened scrutiny over governance and financial management issues at the hospital, which is run by the Kenya Hospital Association.
