Al Shabaab gunmen shoot at Elram police camp in probing mission in Kutulo, Mandera County


Security agencies are on alert in parts of Mandera County after suspected gunmen shot at a police camp in Kutulo area.

Police said the attack was on a probing mission by suspected al Shabaab gunmen operating in the area.

They shot at Elram Anti-Stock Theft Unit on Monday night before escaping.

This was after the officers present shot back in a show of readiness for clash.

Police said the attackers used AK47 rifles in firing at the station before escaping.

The incident heightened operations in the area on Tuesday March 31.

The area is near the Kenya-Somalia border where gunmen attack and escape to their country.

The attacks have affected development at large as the attackers target non locals and security agencies.

Kenya has been making efforts to address the menace by deploying more personnel.

This has led to a drop in the attacks by the terror group in general. Officials link the attacks to instability in Somalia.

Somalia has not had a stable government for more than 30 years which has contributed to the menace at the border with Kenya.

Somalia has not had an effective central government since the 1991 overthrow of President Siad Barre’s military regime, which ushered in more than two decades of anarchy and conflict in a country deeply divided along clan lines.

Kenya launched Operation Linda Nchi on October 14, 2011, after gunmen seized tourists at the Coast, which the Government saw as a threat to the country’s sovereignty
