Police are investigating the murder of an elderly woman whose body was found in her house in Sagana, Kirinyaga County. The woman was identified as Margret Wambui Nyoike, 77.
Police said the murder incident happened on May 4 evening and the motive was yet to be known.
The door of the house was found wide open and body lying on the floor inside her rented house facing upwards with the head under the bed.
Upon further examination, it was noted that the body had a scarf tightly tied on the neck and a foot print on the chest. This indicated that the deceased was strangled to death.
Police said the deceased resided alone and her family members are not known.
The body was moved to the mortuary pending an autopsy and investigations into the murder.
Meanwhile, at least 12 people were killed in separate road accidents in the country on Monday night.
The victims included five riders, three passengers, two drivers, a pedal cyclist and a pillion passenger.
The accidents left at least 33 people with serious injuries, police said.
The injured who included 14 pedestrians, 14 passengers, three riders and two pillion passengers, were admitted to various hospitals, police said.
Fatal accidents have been on the rise amid efforts to address the trend.
Officials say reckless overtaking, speeding, and drunk driving remain among the leading causes of road accidents across the country. They continue to claim lives despite sustained public safety campaigns by National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA).
Mechanical failures from poorly maintained vehicles, including worn tyres and faulty brakes, have also been identified as significant contributors to the growing number of crashes.
In addition to driver negligence, poor road conditions such as potholes, confusing signage, and inadequate lighting, make travel increasingly hazardous, particularly at night.
