A man was found dead in a police cell in Rangwe. The 24-year-old man died in custody at Ngegu Police Station in Rangwe Sub-County, Homa Bay County, in what police describe as a suicide.
According to the police, the incident was recorded on May 3, 2025. The deceased, identified as Wycliff Omondi Dengu, had been arrested and was being held alone in a cell over allegations of stock theft.
Preliminary findings indicate that the deceased allegedly hanged himself using a string tied to a ventilation grill inside the cell. His body was discovered inside the male holding area.
The family of the deceased was also informed of the incident.
The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has also taken over the matter for further investigation, as required in all cases involving deaths in police custody.
The body was moved to the Homa Bay Teaching and Referral Hospital Mortuary. There, it awaits a post-mortem examination to establish the exact cause of death.
Police have also opened an inquest file as investigations continue.
Such incidents have been on the rise amid calls on police authorities to take measures to address the same.
Meanwhile, police officers in Trans-Nzoia County apprehended two suspects for their involvement in organized criminal activities, recovering weapons from their possession.
Acting on intelligence, police officers from Kitale Police Station joined forces with a team of officers from DCI Headquarters, executing a well-coordinated raid in Chebarus and Kibomet areas of Trans Nzoia West Sub-County.
The operation led to the arrest of Dickson Wamocho and Frank Kuyala.
The search yielded a military-style tactical uniform, two pairs of combat boots, a sword, metal rods, and several mobile phones. Police suspect these items were used in criminal activities.
The suspects are now in lawful custody, undergoing processing pending arraignment.
All seized items were also secured as exhibits.
The DCI said it continues to reaffirm its commitment to dismantling organized criminal networks through intelligence-led operations.

The area has been experiencing a wave of crime which prompted the police action.
