Thugs Disappointed As Kahawa West Business Community Religiously Guard Investments During Monday Demos

Residents of Kahawa West joined thousands of other Nairobians on Monday, May 18, in demonstrations demanding a reduction in fuel prices and the high cost of living, as pressure continued mounting on the government over the rising economic burden facing ordinary Kenyans.

From early morning, groups of protesters flooded major roads in the area chanting anti-high fuel price slogans, waving placards and calling for immediate intervention from authorities.

Similar demonstrations were witnessed in several estates across Nairobi, where frustrations over transport costs, food prices and unemployment have continued to dominate public discourse.

However, unlike in some parts of the city where chaos and looting were reported, the business community in Kahawa West appeared fully prepared for any eventuality.

Business owners, shop attendants and youth from the neighborhood organized themselves early enough and stationed themselves outside shops, supermarkets, electronics stores and MPesa outlets armed with clubs and sticks, ready to deal with anyone who attempted to break into businesses.

The strong show of unity among traders seemingly frustrated criminal gangs and opportunistic thugs who had reportedly infiltrated the demonstrations hoping to take advantage of the unrest.

Throughout the day, police presence in the area remained heavy, with officers patrolling key sections of the estate including the shopping center and major access roads.

The officers were also backed by groups of goons, mostly drawn from the neighborhood, who had pink ribbons tied around their wrists for identification purposes.

The groups worked hand in hand to monitor suspicious individuals and quickly respond to any attempts at vandalism or robbery.

Despite several attempts by rowdy youth and suspected criminals to cause destruction and rob residents, the combined efforts of the Kahawa West business community, police officers and the organized neighborhood groups ensured that no major business was looted or destroyed.

At one point, tension escalated after demonstrators allegedly attempted to infiltrate a Family Bank branch located within the estate.

Witnesses said the group tried to force entry into the premises but were repulsed before causing any damage.

Residents who spoke during the protests said they had learned from previous demonstrations where businesses suffered heavy losses after owners failed to secure their premises.

Many traders opted to remain outside their shops the entire day instead of closing completely, insisting that criminals would not be allowed to destroy investments built over many years.

The atmosphere in some sections of the estate remained tense for hours as running battles occasionally erupted between police and protesters.

Teargas could be seen billowing through parts of the roads as officers attempted to disperse crowds that had blocked sections of the highway.

Several people were arrested during the protests in different parts of Kahawa West.

However, many of those detained were reportedly later released after allegedly paying Sh500 each to secure their freedom.

Despite the tension witnessed during the demonstrations, many residents praised the unity displayed by the Kahawa West business community, saying their preparedness prevented what could have turned into massive losses for traders and residents alike.

By evening, calm had gradually returned to the area, with businesses slowly reopening and residents resuming normal activities after a day dominated by protests, heavy police patrols and heightened security vigilance.
