Man, 62, found dead in well in Migori as police probe suspected drowning


Police in Kuria West Sub-county, Migori County, are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a 62-year-old man whose body was discovered inside a well.

The incident was reported on Wednesday, June 17, after members of the public found a body in a narrow well at Namba 5 area.

Police visited the scene and established that the well is located on an uninhabited parcel of land belonging to a woman said to be working in Kitale.

The deceased was identified by his son as Matiko Mwita Boke, 62.

His body was retrieved from the well in what police have described as a suspected drowning.

The body was moved to Kehancha Sub-County Hospital mortuary, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination to establish the cause of death.

Police have launched investigations to determine how the deceased ended up in the well and the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Elsewhere, a 39-year-old man drowned while swimming at Mnarani Beach in Kilifi North Sub-county, Kilifi County.

The incident was reported on Wednesday, June 17, after the man’s companion alerted police that they had visited the beach together before the victim disappeared while swimming.

Police identified the deceased as Peter Mokaya Ogwore, 39.

Police officers visited the scene at Mnarani Beach along the Indian Ocean shoreline in the Old Ferry area.

By the time police arrived, the Kilifi County rescue team had retrieved the body from the water.

A preliminary examination found no visible injuries on the body, suggesting the man drowned while swimming.

The scene was processed and documented before the body was moved to Kilifi County Hospital mortuary, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination.

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the drowning. The woman was left devastated. This is the latest incident to happen at the ocean amid calls for caution on those venturing there for swimming sessions.

And police in Embu East Sub-county identified the body of a man retrieved from a river following a suspected drowning incident.

Police said the deceased was identified by family members as Antony Murithi Jeremiah, 52, a resident of Ngiori Village in Kigumo Sub-location.

According to investigators, Antony had been missing since Sunday, June 14.

Police established that he had been living alone along the banks of the Thuci River after separating from his family several years ago.

The body was removed from the scene and taken to Kyeni Mission Hospital mortuary, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination to establish the exact cause of death.

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Embu East are investigating the circumstances surrounding the suspected drowning.
