One person was killed and four others injured after heavily armed attackers raided Gaboy Village in Hadado Sub-County, Wajir County, on Sunday.
The motive of the attack was not immediately known, police said on Monday.
A multi-agency security team comprising officers from Hadado Sub-County, the Anti-Stock Theft Unit (ASTU), Administration Police Service (APS), and Hadado Police Station visited the scene after the shooting was reported on June 21, 2026.
Preliminary investigations established that a group of gunmen armed with rifles attacked Gaboy Village in Omar Digle Location, leaving one person dead and four others wounded.
The deceased was identified as Bishar Mohammed Hussein, 56. His body was examined by a medical officer at Hadado Health Facility before being released to the family for burial in accordance with Islamic rites.
The injured victims were rushed to Korich Dispensary for treatment. Police said the injured were evacuated for medical care, while three goats were also shot dead during the attack.
Crime scene investigators recovered 61 spent AK-47 cartridges and six spent G3 rifle cartridges, indicating a heavy exchange of gunfire.
The security team also visited the suspected hideout area of Weldire, but found it deserted.
Authorities have not disclosed the motive behind the attack, and investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend those responsible. Residents have been urged to remain calm and maintain peace as security operations continue in the area.
The area is near the Kenya-Somalia border where gunmen strike frequently. There is also the issue of sporadic inter-clan fighting in the area.
This has been recuring leaving the area unstable at large. The government has reacted by deploying more personnel to address the menace. This is through opening of more administrative units in the area.
Instability in Somalia has been a leading factor to the chaos in the area, officials say.
