Bronwyn Bishop entered the Federal Parliament in 1987 when she was elected to the Senate for New South Wales and was re-elected in 1990. In 1994, she resigned from the Senate to contest and win the House of Representatives seat of Mackellar in a by-election. 

She subsequently retained the seat through multiple elections from 1996 to 2013 and remained a federal parliamentarian until retiring before the 2016 election. Her parliamentary career therefore was nearly three decades across both chambers of Parliament.

During her time in opposition, she held numerous shadow ministerial portfolios, including Public Administration, Federal Affairs and Local Government, Urban and Regional Strategy, Health, Privatisation and Commonwealth-State Relations, Veterans’ Affairs, Seniors and Special Minister of State. 

She was also a member of the Shadow Cabinet, contributing to policy development across a broad range of national issues.

Following the election of the Coalition Government in 1996, she served as Minister for Defence Industry, Science and Personnel from 1996 to 1998. 

Afterwards, she became the Minister for Aged Care, from 1998 to 2001.
