A 53-year-old woman and her one-year-old granddaughter died after they were electrocuted at their home in Bungoma County in what investigators suspect was caused by a faulty electrical connection.
The incident occurred on Wednesday morning in Makhonge Village, Mukuyuni Ward, Bungoma Central Sub-County.
The victims were identified as Susan Andayi Waliaula, 53, and her one-year-old granddaughter, Phancilsha Waliaula.
Police officers visited the scene after receiving the report.
Investigators found the two bodies lying beneath a metal clothesline.
Preliminary investigations indicate that Susan, who was carrying the child on her back, had gone to hang clothes on the line when it became electrically charged.
Police suspect the metal clothesline had become live after coming into contact with electricity through iron sheet roofing on an adjacent house due to a faulty electrical connection.
Both victims sustained visible burn injuries consistent with electrocution, according to Kenya Power (KPLC) personnel who examined the scene.
The Kenya Power investigations team processed the scene as detectives launched investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The bodies were moved to Chebukaka Mission Hospital Mortuary, where post-mortem examinations will be conducted.
Meanwhile, police in Vihiga County have launched investigations after the body of an unidentified middle-aged woman was found in a water spring in Emuhaya Sub-county in what is suspected to be a murder.
The body was discovered on Wednesday morning at Aura Springs in Emakunda Village, Emmabwi Sub-location.
Police found the woman’s lifeless body lying inside the spring. Preliminary investigations revealed that a pullover had been tied around her head and neck, and she was not wearing undergarments.
Investigators suspect the woman may have been sexually assaulted before being strangled to death, although the exact cause of death will be established through a post-mortem examination.
Crime scene officers processed and documented the scene before the body was moved to the Vihiga Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary, where it is awaiting identification and an autopsy.
Police have appealed to members of the public with information that could help identify the deceased or assist in the investigation to report to the nearest police station as detectives continue pursuing those responsible.
