Body of 21-year-old man recovered from Ogembo building collapse

Rescue teams recovered the body of a 21-year-old man from the rubble of a collapsed building in Ogembo, Kisii County.

The victim, identified as Steve Javan Okeyo, was retrieved from the rubble at about 11.30pm on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, hours after the four-storey building collapsed in Ogembo town.

His body, which had multiple injuries, was taken to the Gucha Sub-County Morgue pending a postmortem examination.

The recovery operation was still ongoing, with emergency teams continuing to search through the rubble for other possible victims.

Police said a further progress report would be issued as the rescue operation continues.

The building collapsed following heavy rains in the area. Officials said there were at least six people including a child therein at the time of the incident.

Meanwhile, a bitter confrontation between two brothers ended in tragedy in Trans Nzoia, with detectives arresting a suspect in connection with the death of his 35-year-old brother.

It all unfolded on August 5, 2026, at Mbai Farm Village in Kiminini Sub-County, when Nelson Wanundu allegedly got into a physical confrontation with his brother, Isaack Walumoli, following a disagreement.

Wanundu was subsequently rushed to Brown’s Hospital, Kiminini, the following morning for medical attention, but was pronounced dead on arrival.

His body was thereafter moved to Kiminini Cottage Mission Hospital Mortuary, where it remains pending autopsy.

But as the grim reality sank in, Walumoli was nowhere to be found. He remained at large, prompting detectives based at DCI Kiminini to mount an intelligence-led operation to trace his whereabouts.

Acting on actionable intelligence, detectives trailed him to Kitale Town, where they arrested him.

Walumoli was escorted to Kiminini Police Station, where he is currently in custody undergoing processing ahead of arraignment.
