A family is in shock after their 15-year-old relative was hospitalized for eating a raw snake.
The teenager, from Chemogoch Village in Bomet County, is currently receiving treatment at Litein Mission Hospital following the bizarre incident.
Reports indicate that the boy, who had recently started selling local brew, encountered a green tree snake while selling chang’aa near a river.
According to his uncle, the snake was killed by some of the people he was selling to, and the boy later picked it up.
“This young man, who is fifteen, had just begun his chang’aa business.
While selling near the river, the people he was selling to killed a snake, and later, he picked it up,” said his uncle.
The boy’s uncle further explained that the teenager was convinced by the locals that the snake might have been sent by someone jealous of his business.
Angered by this suggestion, the boy decided to take the snake home.
“After the locals deceived him, saying the snake was sent to prevent him from attracting customers, he became upset and decided to take it home,” his uncle added.
When the boy arrived home, he showed his mother the dead snake in his pocket before running off to the river to eat it while drinking water.
“He said, ‘Mother, wait, let me show you,’ then I screamed. He ran to the stream, ate the whole snake, and drank some water,” recalled Emmy Ruto, the boy’s mother.
Upon learning that the boy had eaten the snake, his uncle quickly rushed to the scene with other locals to rescue him.
They found that the venom from the snake had begun to take effect and immediately rushed him to the hospital.
“When I tried to stop him, people told me he had been bitten by the snake. We tied him up and rushed him to the hospital,” said John Ruto, the boy’s uncle.
Dr. Valentine Mbithi, a physician at Litein Mission Hospital, described the case as extremely rare.
“This is an unprecedented case.
We’ve never seen anything like this before, but he is now stable and recovering in the High Dependency Unit (HDU) after being discharged from the ICU,” Dr. Mbithi said.
