Titus Wekesa Sifuna, the X (formerly Twitter) user accused of impersonating President William Ruto, has been released on a cash bail of sh.100,000 or an alternative bond of sh.1 million.
Sifuna was first presented before the Milimani Law Courts on Tuesday under a miscellaneous application.
He stands accused of using his X account, under the handle @5thethief and username “I must go”, to post derogatory remarks targeting President Ruto and his family.
According to the prosecution, the posts sparked negative public reactions and posed a threat to national peace and cohesion.
“The content of the X account poses a serious threat to the country’s reputation, as the President is a symbol of national unity and should be respected and honoured by all,” the court was told.
The prosecution further argued that the shared content including images and messages amounted to hate speech and had the potential to incite ethnic divisions.
It was also alleged that Sifuna manipulated the account’s profile to include an image of the President, an act authorities say is misleading and harmful.
Prosecutors had requested that Sifuna be held for seven more days to allow police to complete their investigations.
