Music career overview

AC/DC was founded in Sydney in November 1973 by brothers Angus Young and Malcolm Young. Afterwards, the band pivoted towards a stripped-down, blues-based hard rock style, building a formidable live reputation across Australia.

The arrival of vocalist Bon Scott in 1974 proved catalytic. His delivery and lyricism sharpened the band’s working-class identity. Their Australasia-only releases High Voltage (1975) and T.N.T. (1975) yielded national hits including “It’s a Long Way to the Top (If You Wanna Rock ’n’ Roll)”.

Signing with Atlantic Records in 1976 marked a strategic inflection point. International edition albums, High Voltage and Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap, broadened their exposure.

By 1979, Highway to Hell, became their first US Top 20 album.

Unfortunately, Bon Scott died in February 1980. AC/DC later recruited English singer Brian Johnson. Afterwards, they released Back in Black, a landmark album and tribute to Bon Scott that became the second best-selling album in history.

Featuring “Hells Bells” and “You Shook Me All Night Long”, it topped at number one in the UK and Top 5 in the US, spending over a decade cumulatively on the Billboard 200.

The follow-up, For Those About to Rock We Salute You in 1981, delivered their first US No. 1 album.

Later on, drummer Phil Rudd departed in 1983. Nonetheless, the band retained success with the soundtrack album Who Made Who, released in 1986.

In 1990, they released The Razors Edge album in 1990, which featured the global hit “Thunderstruck” and restored multi-platinum momentum.

Their 1992 live album AC/DC Live and high-profile performances, reinforced their dominance.

Albums such as Ballbreaker (1995), Stiff Upper Lip (2000), and especially Black Ice (2008) topped charts in 29 countries.

In 2014, Malcolm Young retired and later passed on in 2017. Their 2014 album, Rock or Bust , still reached number one in multiple countries.

Touring disruptions followed when Brian Johnson temporarily stepped aside in 2016 due to hearing loss, with Axl Rose completing tour dates. Bassist Cliff Williams also announced his departure, leading to a temporary hiatus.

A major revival occurred in 2020 when Johnson, Rudd, and Williams rejoined Angus and Stevie Young for Power Up, recorded as a tribute to Malcolm. The album topped at number one in numerous markets.

Subsequent tours, including the 2024/2025 Power Up Tour, confirmed sustained demand decades into their career.
