Affordable Housing demand hits 1 million

Kenyans registered under the Boma Yangu platform (bomayangu.go.ke) have now surpassed the 1 million mark, underscoring strong and growing interest in the affordable housing projects among Kenyans.

The data from Affordable Housing Board indicate that these projects are attractive

due to their prime locations within urban areas, provision of infrastructure such as

roads, electricity and water developments, as well as essential public services from

schools, markets, healthcare and shopping facilities.

Speaking on the milestone, Housing PS Charles Hinga expressed optimism saying,

“one million Kenyans committing to own housing units is not a small feat. Kenyans

have outgrown pessimism about AHP and are now saving money for their preferred

unit through the government-owned portal, Bomayangu.

““This government is setting a historic precedent in housing delivery. While it took 15 years to build 5,000 units in Buruburu, the Mukuru AHP delivered 1,078 units in its first year and successfully handed over 4,500 completed units to new homeowners on 18th December. The estate features a shopping complex, a Level 4 hospital, and an education complex comprising pre-primary, primary, junior, and senior secondary schools.”

Hinga said AHP is designed to cater for different income levels where it offers social

housing for very low-income households earning up to Sh20,000 per month,

affordable housing for those in the low- to middle-income bracket earning between

Sh20,000 and Sh149,000, and market-rate housing for higher-income earner.

AHP has over 262,913 housing units under construction across 47 counties where

428,000 Kenyans directly work fulltime on the various sites, while another one million

workers are currently engaged full-time providing raw materials, accessories and

services to the AHP construction sites.
