Balancing Books And Music: KCA’s Victor Gitonga On Balancing Journalism And Music


KCA University’s has Victor Gitonga is not an ordinary student he is a talented musician and an aspiring journalist, Gitonga is mastering the art of balancing academic life and a thriving music career, proving that passion and discipline can indeed go hand in hand.

In an elite interview with Doricas Rhobi Chacha in campus studio, Victor Gitonga shared insights on to how he has managed to stay a float in two demanding fields: journalism and digital media Gitonga acknowledges his effective time management to strict scheduling.

Week days are devotated to studies, while weekends are set for aside for music be it concerts, song writing or studio sections.

 “I always ensure I set an alarm and give everything a time frame”, he exaplained. Interestingly, Gitonga finds that journalism and music complement each other.

 “Both fields require discipline, time management, and creativity,” he said.

His journalism studies have exposed him to the technical side of production, helping him sharpen his skills in photography, videography, and editing the skills he uses to direct and produce his own music videos.

“My songs are often inspired by real life in campus,” he added, explaining more how academic experiences often shapen his lyrical content Gitonga’s decision to pursue higher education alongside music was inspired by family and prominent figures in Kenya’s entertainment scene.

“In my family, we’ve got musicians.

 They always told me that to succeed in music, you must also pursue education,” he said, citing musicians like Nameless and Femi One who have successfully merged both worlds.

Rather than viewing his academic and artistic paths as separate, he sees them as deeply integrated.

“Journalism is all about sound, production, and storytelling so is music,” he emphasized.

However, the journey hasn’t been without challenges. Financial limitations often limit music production and in journalism.

Standing out in a crowded field remains a tough challenge. Despite this, Gitonga remains persistent.

“Challenges are stepping stones. If you’re not facing any, then you’re not growing.”

To fellow students balancing talent and academics, Gitonga’s advice is simple but insightful: “Pursue both with the same energy. Education opens doors that talent alone might not, and talent gives you a unique edge.”
