Bandits suspected to have crossed from neighbouring Tana River County attacked a livestock compound in Kyuso, Kitui County, killing eight animals and injuring eight others in a pre-dawn shooting incident.
Police said the attack occurred at about 2am on Sunday, September 6, 2026, at the residence of a herder, in an incident reported to Ngomeni Police Station later in the morning.
Investigators recovered three live rounds of 7.62x39mm ammunition and 30 spent cartridges of the same calibre.
The livestock compound contained nine cows, 229 goats and 79 sheep. Three cows were shot dead while four others sustained gunshot wounds.
Five goats were also killed and four others injured during the attack.
Police said the attackers are believed to be bandits from the a local community residing in neighbouring Tana River County.
Investigators suspect the shooting could have been a revenge attack linked to the recent killing of camels allegedly by criminals in the area.
Tension remained high in the area amid fears of more retaliations.
