A Catholic priest in Bomet County was arraigned in court on Wednesday over allegations of assaulting a 14-year-old boy within church premises.
The alleged incident is reported to have taken place on September 2, within the church compound.
The victim, a Grade 8 student, was reportedly physically assaulted, though the exact circumstances leading up to the altercation remain unclear.
In a surprising twist, the boy’s mother was also charged in connection with the same incident.
Prosecutors allege that she too assaulted her son, though details surrounding her involvement are yet to be fully disclosed in court.
Both the priest and the mother appeared before Chief Magistrate Esther Boke, where they pleaded not guilty.
The court released each of them on a cash bond of sh.150,000, pending further proceedings.
The case is set for mention on September 16, when the court will provide additional directions, including whether more witnesses will be called or if the matter will proceed to a full trial.
The incident has sparked concern in the local community, with many expressing shock at the involvement of both a member of the clergy and the boy’s parent.
Child rights advocates have called for a thorough and impartial investigation to ensure justice is served.
Meanwhile, church authorities have not yet issued an official statement regarding the case.
