The Nairobi County Government, through the Office of Urban and Development Planning, has issued a directive mandating that specific buildings in Nairobi be repainted and equipped with new or repaired security lights.
In a public notice dated January 20, 2025, the County Government outlined that property owners, tenants, and property managers within the affected areas are required to comply with these changes.
The notice cites several laws, including the Physical and Land Use Planning Act (2019) and the Public Health Act (2012), as the legal basis for the order.
The areas that will be affected by this directive include key zones such as the Central Business District (CBD), Westlands Shopping Center Area, Upper Hill District, and Ngara.
Property owners and managers in these locations are instructed to ensure that their buildings are repainted with a fresh coat of paint and that new security lights are installed or existing ones repaired.
The County Government emphasized that the order will take effect immediately and will remain in place for 90 days.
After this period, the County Government will begin legal enforcement against those who fail to comply.
This announcement follows Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja’s comments during a church service on Sunday, January 19, 2025, where he urged landlords to repaint their buildings within the stipulated 90 days.
Governor Sakaja also mentioned that efforts to restore roads within Nairobi would be carried out in the same timeframe.
The initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance the aesthetics and safety of Nairobi’s urban spaces.
Additionally, Nairobi County’s Chief Officer for Environment, Geoffrey Mosiria, issued a separate notice to matatu owners regarding the management of bus stages.
The notice outlined four key directives focused on improving cleanliness and orderliness in public spaces.
These included proper stage management during non-operational hours, waste management protocols, noise and nuisance control, and an emphasis on immediate enforcement to maintain a cleaner and more organized city.
