Police in Mombasa have arrested a Burundian national after recovering 74 mobile phones suspected to have been stolen during an intelligence-led operation in Likoni area.
The suspect was arrested on Thursday evening after undercover officers raided a mobile phone shop in the Ferry area of Likoni Sub-County.
According to police, the operation led to the recovery of 74 mobile phones of various brands believed to be stolen.
The recovered devices included 10 Samsung A05 phones, seven Samsung A06 phones, 19 Samsung A07 phones, seven HMD phones, four Vivo phones, 10 Tecno phones, four Oppo phones, five Infinix phones, two iPhone 6S handsets and two Samsung A02 phones.
The suspect was taken to Likoni Police Station, where he remains in custody as detectives continue investigations to establish the source of the phones and whether they are linked to reported theft cases.
Police said further investigations are underway before the suspect is arraigned in court.
Police say such gadgets are taken to neighbouring countries where they are refurbished and sold to unsuspecting buyers. Others are dismantled for spare parts.
Teams have been staging operations to recover the gadgets and arrested dozens of suspects who remain under probe and in custody.
