Ms. Clare Adindo Odhiambo, a 20-year-old woman, has come forward to clear the air after false claims circulated online, alleging her abduction by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
The claims, which were spread alongside her photos from TikTok, wrongly identified her as “Naomi” and stated that she had been abducted.
In response, Clare visited the DCI offices in Kibra to clarify that she had neither been abducted nor arrested by the police.
In her statement, Clare said, “The photos you’ve seen are mine, but the claims of my abduction are completely false.
I have not been taken or arrested by anyone, and I am safe.”
She also addressed the confusion surrounding her identity, stating, “My name is Clare Adindo Odhiambo, not Naomi.
The rumors that have been spread are completely unfounded.”
Clare expressed her frustration over the misinformation, stating, “I am really upset that people are spreading such a dangerous and false narrative about me.
I want to make it clear that I have not been a victim of any crime, and I have never been in danger.”
The DCI responded swiftly, emphasizing its commitment to thoroughly investigating such allegations.
“Abduction and kidnapping are serious crimes under Kenyan law,” the agency said in a statement.
“The DCI does not condone any form of abduction or kidnapping.
These actions are illegal and violate the fundamental rights of citizens, and we will ensure that those responsible are held accountable.”
The DCI also condemned the spread of false information, which it stated could cause unnecessary panic.
“We urge the public to be cautious when sharing information online and to refrain from spreading unverified details.
False claims can harm not only the individuals involved but also the wider community,” the statement read.
In its broader appeal to the public, the DCI called for collective efforts to prevent crime and safeguard the rights of individuals.
“We urge Kenyans to remain vigilant and work with law enforcement to combat criminal activities, including the spread of harmful misinformation,” the agency stated.
Clare’s case highlights the dangers of misinformation on social media, where rumors can easily spiral out of control.
“I just want people to know the truth, and I hope this clears things up,” Clare added.
The DCI’s investigation into the incident is ongoing, with the agency promising to take legal action against those responsible for spreading the false claims about her abduction.
