From his earliest days at Westmeadows, Dane Swan’s natural talent was evident, highlighted by a standout role in the club’s under-14 premiership side. 

A pivotal moment came in 2001 when a visit from Mick Malthouse to the Calder Cannons sparked a shift in his mindset. He went on to star in the Cannons’ premiership, outperforming highly rated peers and earning selection by Collingwood as pick 58 in the celebrated 2001 “Super Draft”.

His early AFL years were spent largely developing in the Victorian Football League (VFL) with Williamstown, where he was part of the 2003 premiership team while also making his senior debut for Collingwood.

That period proved critical to his growth, particularly after senior teammates helped refine his preparation and professionalism. 

In 2007, he emerged as a genuine midfield force, briefly leading the Brownlow Medal count midway through the season and announcing himself as one of the competition’s rising stars.

The breakthrough came in 2008, when he won the first of three consecutive Copeland Trophies. 

He elevated his career to elite status in 2010. Why? He produced a career-best season with 820 disposals, claimed a third Copeland Trophy, won the Leigh Matthews Trophy and the AFL Coaches Association Champion Player of the Year award, and also collected numerous honours. Most importantly, he played a defining role in Collingwood’s premiership, sealing the Grand Final replay with a crucial third-quarter goal. 

In 2011, he won the Brownlow Medal. 

Afterwards, he maintained his record through 2012 and 2013, becoming the first player to record five consecutive seasons of 700 or more disposals and finishing his career with 6,928 disposals at an average of 26.85 per game.

In 2015, he finished second in the Copeland Trophy and also broke Collingwood’s all-time record for career Brownlow votes.

Unfortunately, a severe foot injury early in 2016 ended his playing days.
