The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has released additional details surrounding the tragic death of Molo activist Richard Otieno, which has sent shockwaves through the local community and beyond.

According to a statement from the DCI on Saturday, January 25, Otieno, who was last seen on the night of January 19, 2025, at Alpha’s Club in Elburgon town, was enjoying a game of pool with friends before he decided to head home around 11 PM.

However, upon reaching his gate, Otieno was violently attacked by unknown assailants and suffered severe injuries to his head.

“He was immediately rushed to Elburgon Sub-County Hospital for emergency treatment but was sadly pronounced dead upon arrival,” the DCI confirmed.

The investigation is progressing, with detectives focusing on several individuals who may hold key information about the attack.

Oduor confirmed that the cause of death was severe head trauma resulting from a sharp object, possibly a panga or an axe.

Otieno sustained multiple slash wounds to the back of his head, which caused a skull fracture and extensive brain hemorrhaging.

Additional slash wounds to the front of his skull, while not resulting in fractures, contributed to his overall injuries, along with bruises on his arms that suggest he may have tried to fight off his attackers.

“There were severe injuries including slash wounds on the back of the head that fractured the skull and caused significant brain bleeding,” said Oduor.

“There were also injuries on the front of the skull and bruises on the arms, which indicate a possible struggle.”

In addition, the DCI has collected several samples from Otieno’s body, including fingernail clippings for DNA analysis and toxicological samples, in an effort to further investigate whether any substances may have been used to subdue him before the attack.

“We have collected samples for both DNA and toxicology tests to explore the possibility of Otieno being incapacitated before the assault,” Oduor explained.
