DCI says no foul play suspected in death of former minister Cyrus Jirongo

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has issued an update on investigations into the death of former Cabinet minister and businessman Cyrus Jirongo, indicating that preliminary findings point to a road traffic accident.

In a statement released on January 5, the DCI said there is currently no evidence of foul play in Jirongo’s death, which occurred on the night of December 13, 2025, at the Kavai area along the Nakuru–Nairobi Highway.

“The Directorate of Criminal Investigations wishes to update the public on the ongoing investigations into the tragic death of Hon. Cyrus Jirongo,” the statement read in part.

Following public concern and speculation, the DCI launched immediate investigations and formed a multi-disciplinary team comprising homicide detectives, officers from the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau, and forensic experts from the National Forensic Laboratory.

The team processed the scene, secured and preserved key exhibits, and documented physical evidence.

CCTV footage from Eagol Petrol Station near the scene was recovered and subjected to forensic examination.

Investigators also obtained the manifest of the bus involved in the incident, along with amateur video recordings taken at the scene. All materials were analysed as part of the inquiry.

Statements were recorded from several witnesses, including Jirongo’s wife, Ann Lanot Pertet, who was the first family member contacted after the incident.

The driver and conductor of the bus involved, Eagol Petrol Station staff, and seven passengers who later came forward also gave statements.

Additionally, investigators recorded statements from individuals who interacted with Jirongo earlier on the evening of December 12, 2025, at Karen Oasis restaurant.

These included Rt. Hon. Moses Wetang’ula, Mr. Rebman Malala, and Mr. Ibrahim Sambili, who voluntarily provided their accounts.

The driver of an alleged rescue bus, registration number KCU 573A, also recorded a statement.

Based on the evidence analysed so far, the DCI said the incident appears to have been a road traffic accident, with no indications of criminal intent.

Investigations are ongoing, and once complete, the file will be forwarded to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) for further direction.

This may include consideration of possible charges against the public service vehicle driver, depending on the evidence.

The DCI extended condolences to Jirongo’s family, relatives, and friends, and urged the public and political leaders to avoid speculation or unverified statements that could compromise the investigation.

The agency also called on anyone with relevant information to share it through official DCI channels.
