Shortly after leaving prison, Don King launched a career that would transform him into one of boxing’s most influential promoters.

Boxing

His entry into the sport began in 1972 when he persuaded the legendary American boxer Muhammad Ali, with help from singer Lloyd Price, to participate in a charity exhibition in Cleveland benefiting a financially distressed local hospital. The event grossed more than $80,000 and sparked his interest in professional fight promotion.

He initially partnered with experienced Cleveland promoter Don Elbaum, gaining access to an established stable of fighters and deeper insight into the business.

His significant moment was in 1974 when he engineered one of the most celebrated heavyweight bouts in history. This was Muhammad Ali’s challenge to George Foreman in Zaire (now Democratic Republic of Congo), known worldwide as “The Rumble in the Jungle”.

By negotiating a record-setting $10 million purse financed by the government of Zaire, he outmaneuvered competing promoters and launched his financial empire. He followed this success with Ali’s 1975 bout against Chuck Wepner. The bout is widely believed to have inspired the film “Rocky”.

Later that year, he solidified his reputation with the Ali–Joe Frazier trilogy finale in Manila, the iconic “Thrilla in Manila”.

Throughout the 1970s, he built a roster of elite fighters who would later enter the International Boxing Hall of Fame. His promotional banner represented champions such as Larry Holmes, Wilfred Benítez, Roberto Durán, Salvador Sánchez, Wilfredo Gómez and Alexis Argüello.

He continued to remain a dominant force in the sport. He promoted many of the era’s biggest stars and title events, working with Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield, Julio César Chávez, Bernard Hopkins, Félix Trinidad, Marco Antonio Barrera, and numerous other world-class fighters.

His influence also extended beyond boxing, he promoted The Jacksons’ 1984 Victory Tour and later acquired the Cleveland-based newspaper Call and Post in 1998, serving as its publisher for more than a decade.

2023-2024

In 2023, he emerged as the financier of Major League Wrestling’s Bomaye Fight Club, demonstrating his continued presence in combat sports.

The following year, he remained active in boxing promotion and engaged in negotiations with Canadian promoter Dan Otter to stage a WBC cruiserweight world title bout.
