Police officers in Mandera East Sub-County have arrested a suspected drug peddler and recovered narcotics during a routine patrol within Mandera Town, in a continued crackdown on illicit drugs in the region.
According to the National Police Service (NPS), officers intercepted the suspect during a routine security operation and, upon conducting a search, discovered 50 small rolled bundles of cannabis concealed in a small bag.
A machete that had been hidden on the suspect’s back was also recovered. Both the narcotics and the weapon were seized and documented as exhibits.
The suspect was immediately taken into custody and is being held at a local police station as detectives conduct further investigations to establish whether he is linked to a wider drug distribution network operating within Mandera and neighbouring areas.
Police are also probing the intended destination of the drugs and whether the suspect had accomplices.
Authorities said the arrest forms part of ongoing efforts to disrupt the supply and circulation of illegal drugs, which have been blamed for rising insecurity and social challenges in parts of the county.
The National Police Service reaffirmed its commitment to combating narcotics and related crimes through enhanced patrols, community policing, and intelligence-led operations aimed at safeguarding public safety and security.
