Duale Leads Stakeholder Talks as Kenya Pushes Digital Healthcare Transformation

Kenya is stepping up efforts to modernize its healthcare system through digital innovation as the government prepares for the upcoming Kenya Health Summit, a key forum expected to shape the future of healthcare delivery in the country.

To lay the groundwork for the summit, Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale convened a high-level meeting bringing together development partners, private sector players, professional associations, civil society organizations and other key stakeholders in the health sector.

The consultative meeting focused on aligning stakeholders around the objectives and priorities of the summit while reviewing progress made under ongoing health sector reforms.

At the centre of the discussions was the government’s ambitious digital health agenda, which officials say will play a critical role in delivering Universal Health Coverage (UHC) through the Taifa Care model.

Speaking during the meeting, Duale said digital transformation remains one of the most important pillars in the government’s efforts to improve healthcare access, efficiency and quality across the country.

“Digital health is a critical enabler of Universal Health Coverage. Through Taifa Care, we are building a healthcare system that is more efficient, more accountable and more responsive to the needs of Kenyans,” Duale said.

The Cabinet Secretary noted that strengthening digital health infrastructure would improve patient care, streamline service delivery and enhance decision-making through real-time data and analytics.

Stakeholders discussed strategies aimed at strengthening interoperable digital health systems, improving health information management, promoting innovation and ensuring that healthcare services reach even the most underserved communities.

Participants also explored ways of leveraging technology to improve disease surveillance, patient records management, supply chain efficiency and healthcare financing.

According to Duale, the upcoming Kenya Health Summit will serve as an important platform for showcasing the progress Kenya has made in its digital health transformation journey.

“The Kenya Health Summit will provide an opportunity to showcase our achievements, strengthen partnerships, mobilize investment and accelerate the adoption of innovative technologies that improve health outcomes for all Kenyans,” he said.

The Health CS emphasized that collaboration between government, development partners and the private sector remains essential to achieving sustainable healthcare reforms.

“No single institution can transform the health sector alone. We must work together to build a connected, inclusive and resilient health system capable of meeting the needs of present and future generations,” he added.

The meeting comes at a time when Kenya is implementing far-reaching healthcare reforms under the Social Health Authority (SHA) framework, which seeks to expand access to affordable healthcare while improving service delivery through technology and innovation.

Health experts attending the meeting noted that digital solutions have become increasingly important in improving healthcare access, particularly in remote and underserved areas.

Among the key issues discussed were investments in digital infrastructure, health data interoperability, cybersecurity, telemedicine, artificial intelligence in healthcare and strategies for increasing the adoption of electronic health records.

World Health Organization (WHO) Country Representative Dr. Neema Kimambo and other development partners reaffirmed their commitment to supporting Kenya’s efforts to strengthen healthcare systems and achieve Universal Health Coverage.

The meeting was attended by Principal Secretary for Medical Services Dr. Ouma Oluga, Principal Secretary for Public Health and Professional Standards Mary Muthoni, Director-General for Health Dr. Patrick Amoth, chief executives of state corporations and regulatory agencies, representatives of Development Partners in Health Kenya, the Kenya Healthcare Federation, civil society organizations, the Council of Governors Secretariat, United Nations agencies and senior Ministry of Health officials.

As preparations for the Kenya Health Summit gather momentum, the government says it remains focused on leveraging technology, innovation and strategic partnerships to build a modern healthcare system that delivers quality, affordable and accessible services to all Kenyans.

“We invite all partners to actively participate in the Summit and continue supporting Kenya’s digital health agenda as we work towards a more connected and sustainable health system,” Duale said.
