EACC arrests Kisumu police officer over alleged sh15,000 bribe demand

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has arrested a police officer attached to Mamboleo Police Post in Kisumu over allegations of soliciting and receiving a Ksh15,000 bribe from a member of the public.

In a statement issued on Friday, the commission said Sergeant Gilbert Kiama Oduor was arrested on January 28, 2026, following investigations into claims that he demanded money to facilitate the release of a suspect held in police custody.

According to the EACC, officers from Mamboleo Police Post, accompanied by the area chief, conducted a raid at the home of John Oluoch on January 23 over suspected possession of bhang. Although no illegal substance was recovered during the search, Oluoch was arrested and booked at the police post.

The commission said that when Oluoch’s family followed up on the matter, they were directed to Sergeant Oduor, who allegedly demanded Ksh15,000 to prevent the suspect from being arraigned in court. The family reported the alleged demand to the EACC, triggering investigations.

“Further investigations revealed that officers from Mamboleo Police Post facilitated Mr. Oluoch to solicit bribe money from relatives while he was held in custody from January 23, 2026. During this time, he was moved between various police cells as officers waited for the delivery of the demanded bribe,” the commission stated.

On January 28, EACC officers mounted an operation at the Winam Law Courts, where Sergeant Oduor was arrested while allegedly receiving the sh15,000 from the complainant.

The commission further noted that shortly after the arrest of the officer, Oluoch was charged with possession of bhang—four days after his initial arrest—contrary to the constitutional requirement that suspects be presented in court within 24 hours.

Sergeant Oduor was later booked at Railways and Ports Police Station, processed, and released on bond pending the completion of investigations.
