Eight-year-old boy drowns in abandoned quarry in Teso, Busia County

An eight-year-old boy drowned after accidentally falling into a water-filled abandoned quarry in Teso South Sub-County, Busia County.

According to the police, the incident occurred at about 7.30pm on Thursday when the child was playing with other children near the quarry.

Investigators established that the abandoned quarry, located about 300 metres from the family homestead, had filled with water and was allegedly left uncovered by road contractors about five years ago.

Authorities believe the child accidentally slipped and fell into the quarry while playing with his peers. The fall is thought to have led to the drowning in the water-filled site.

The boy’s body was retrieved from the water lying in a supine position. Police confirmed that no visible injuries were observed on the body.
