Eight-year-old girl drowns in Urra River in Meru County


Police in Akachiu Sub-County, Meru County, are investigating the death of an eight-year-old girl whose body was found floating in Urra River.

The incident was reported at Kanuni Police Station at about 4pm on Monday, August 24, 2026, after Kabuleni Location Chief Gedion Geteye alerted police about the drowning.

Police officers, accompanied by Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) personnel, visited the scene, located about eight kilometres southeast of Kanuni Police Station, and found the body of a female child floating in the river.

The deceased was aged about eight years, who was reported to have been living with a disability.

According to preliminary information, Piona allegedly left her home on Sunday, August 23, at an unknown time without the knowledge of her parents.

Her body was discovered floating in the river at about midday on Monday.

Police and DCI officers processed and documented the scene before the body was retrieved and moved to Nyambene Sub-County Hospital mortuary, where it was preserved pending an autopsy.

Police said no visible physical injuries were noted on the body.

Investigations are ongoing to establish the circumstances that led to the child’s death.

And a 16-year-old boy was found dead after his body was spotted floating in River Tana in Oda area, Tana River County.

The body was discovered by fishermen at around 6:30pm on Monday, August 24, 2026, and the incident was reported to Tarasaa Police Station.

Police officers, assisted by members of the public, retrieved the body from the river.

The deceased was identified as Baraka Hiribae, alias Hibo, a 16-year-old boy from Marereni who was working as a farmhand at a nearby farm.

According to preliminary information, the teenager had been unreachable through his known mobile phone number since Saturday, August 22, raising concerns among those who knew him.

The circumstances under which he entered the river remain unclear. Police processed the scene as investigations commenced to establish what led to his death.

The body was moved to Malindi Sub-County Hospital Mortuary, where it was preserved pending an autopsy to establish the cause of death.
