What began as a local event for educators in Kirinyaga County has grown into a national interest , as teachers from across Kenya gear up for the upcoming Teachers’ Sports Day, themed “Beyond the Chalk.”
The event will be held on Saturday, August 23, at Kerugoya Stadium.
Organized by Athletics Kenya, Kirinyaga region, in collaboration with the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) – Kirinyaga branch, and the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET), the sports day aims to empower educators by promoting teamwork, talent, and the spirit of sportsmanship in the work place.
Participants will compete in a wide range of sporting disciplines, including volleyball, athletics, darts, netball, and football.
“This event was initially intended for teachers within Kirinyaga, but it has since attracted participants from other regions across the country,” said David Miano, Athletics Kenya Central Region Chairman and National Treasurer.
“So far, over 400 teachers have registered for this one-day event.”
The initiative also aims to expose and equip young teachers with hands-on experience that can help them become better trainers and mentors within their schools.
Security has been beefed up at the event ahead of its start.
