FIFA President Praises Kenya’s CHAN 2024 Preparations

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has lauded Kenya’s preparations for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), describing the efforts as a significant investment in the country’s youth and football future.

Speaking at a press conference in Nairobi on Saturday, August 30, 2025, Infantino dismissed claims that East African football is underdeveloped compared to other regions of the continent.

“The perception that football is more advanced in the West, North, or South of Africa while the East is lagging is simply wrong,” Infantino said.

The passion here, the commitment, the construction of new stadiums, and the infrastructure all show that this region is on the rise. Forty million viewers, massive fan engagement this is a powerful reason to invest, especially in the youth, who possess tremendous talent.”

Infantino also hinted at upcoming FIFA-backed initiatives in Kenya, including the establishment of football academies and a national training center.

“We are fully committed to youth development and will soon unveil an exciting project involving academies and national infrastructure. FIFA is channeling more of its revenue back into football in Kenya and across Africa,” he added.

“Let’s not forget the importance of World Cup qualifiers  they are a crucial part of African football.”

Confederation of African Football (CAF) President Patrice Motsepe also commended Kenya’s enthusiastic fan base, noting their strong turnout during CHAN 2024 as a promising sign ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which Kenya is set to co-host.

“What excites me is the level of support we’ve seen fan parks filled with hundreds of thousands of people, and over 40 million viewers tuning in,” said Motsepe. “For CAF, CHAN is a key competition that drives investment, stimulates interest, and motivates young talent.”

Both Infantino and Motsepe are expected to attend the CHAN 2024 final between Madagascar and Morocco, scheduled to take place at Kasarani Stadium in Nairobi.

Launched in 2009, CHAN is a vital tournament aimed at promoting homegrown talent by providing a competitive platform exclusively for players active in their national domestic leagues.

It plays a critical role in enhancing the visibility, competitiveness, and commercial appeal of African football globally.
