A routine Flydubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv descended into chaos on Wednesday, September 30, after a violent confrontation reportedly erupted inside the cockpit, forcing the aircraft to make an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia.
The incident involved Flydubai Flight FZ1073, a Boeing 737 MAX 8 travelling from Dubai International Airport to Ben Gurion International Airport in Tel Aviv.
What initially appeared to be a physical altercation between the two pilots has since taken a more serious turn, with reports suggesting that one of the pilots may have attempted to take control of the aircraft.
The dramatic incident sparked an international security response after the aircraft transmitted emergency signals, including a transponder code associated with unlawful interference.
According to reports, passengers also became involved after hearing screams from the cockpit, with some helping crew members bring the situation under control.
Flight suddenly loses thousands of feet
Flight-tracking data showed that FZ1073 was cruising at approximately 34,000 feet when it suddenly began a rapid descent.
Reuters reported that the aircraft lost nearly 14,000 feet in less than 30 seconds, while other analyses of flight-tracking data put the total altitude loss at more than 17,000 feet.
The sudden descent raised alarm because the aircraft was travelling normally before the dramatic change in altitude.
Shortly afterwards, the aircraft transmitted the international emergency code 7700.
The aircraft then briefly switched to squawk 7500, a code used to alert air-traffic controllers to possible unlawful interference aboard an aircraft.
It later returned to the general emergency code.
The unusual sequence immediately triggered concern among aviation and security authorities.
Passengers reportedly heard screams
According to passenger accounts cited by several news outlets, panic spread through the cabin after people heard shouting and screams coming from the cockpit.
Reports said passengers were subsequently called upon to assist after the cockpit door was opened.
Some passengers reportedly helped restrain the person involved in the confrontation while the crew worked to regain control of the aircraft.
One passenger described the experience as extremely frightening, saying those on board feared they might not survive the ordeal.
Other accounts indicated that one of the pilots had suffered serious injuries during the confrontation.
However, authorities had not released a complete official account establishing exactly what happened inside the cockpit.
Israeli authorities feared possible hijacking
The transmission of the 7500 signal triggered a major security response.
Israeli authorities reportedly scrambled fighter jets as officials attempted to establish whether the aircraft had been hijacked.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also held urgent security consultations as authorities monitored the developing situation.
The situation was particularly sensitive because the flight was carrying Israeli passengers and was travelling on a route between the United Arab Emirates and Israel.
However, early official assessments were more cautious about describing the incident as a hijacking.
Reuters reported that an Israeli official said the incident was not initially believed to have been a conventional hijacking, describing it instead as a different type of aviation incident.
Later reports, however, raised questions over whether one of the pilots had attempted to take control of the aircraft or deliberately endanger it.

Emergency landing in Saudi Arabia
Rather than continuing to Tel Aviv, the aircraft was diverted to Tabuk in northwestern Saudi Arabia.
The Boeing 737 MAX 8 eventually landed safely at Tabuk Airport, bringing an end to the frightening ordeal.
Flydubai confirmed that the aircraft had experienced an incident while travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv.
The airline said all passengers were safe and accounted for and that its teams were working with the relevant authorities.
Both pilots were reportedly taken to hospital after the aircraft landed.
Their injuries were linked to the confrontation inside the aircraft, although authorities had not provided a comprehensive medical update.
Saudi Arabia landing creates unusual situation
The emergency landing attracted additional attention because Saudi Arabia and Israel do not have formal diplomatic relations.
Despite that, Saudi airspace is used by some commercial flights travelling between Israel and other countries.
Flydubai operates flights between Dubai and Tel Aviv, a route that became possible following the normalisation of relations between the United Arab Emirates and Israel under the 2020 Abraham Accords.
The incident therefore placed passengers on an Israel-bound aircraft in an unusual situation when they were forced to land in Saudi Arabia.
Reports indicated that arrangements were being made for another aircraft to transport the passengers onward to Israel.

Flydubai says passengers were safe
In its statement, Flydubai maintained that the aircraft landed safely in Tabuk and that the safety and wellbeing of passengers and crew remained its priority.
The airline said it was cooperating with the relevant authorities and would provide additional information as confirmed details became available.
The dramatic incident has since attracted widespread attention because of the combination of a cockpit confrontation, a sudden loss of altitude, emergency signals and the diversion of an Israel-bound flight to Saudi Arabia.
