Fugitive Robbery Suspect Arrested in Garissa After Skipping Court Appearance

A 21-year-old man wanted in connection with two robbery with violence cases has been arrested in Garissa after detectives tracked him down following weeks of evading arrest.

The suspect, identified as Hamza Abdi Dagane, was apprehended in the Bulla Medina area of Garissa Township during an intelligence-led operation conducted by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

According to investigators, Dagane had been on the run after failing to appear before the Garissa Law Courts on June 29, 2026, prompting the court to issue a warrant for his arrest.

Detectives said they launched a manhunt immediately after receiving information that the suspect had absconded court proceedings despite facing serious criminal charges.

“Acting on intelligence, detectives traced and arrested the suspect in Bulla Medina, effectively ending his attempts to evade the law,” the DCI said in a statement.

Authorities revealed that Dagane is facing two separate robbery with violence cases, one of the most serious offences under Kenyan law, which carries severe penalties upon conviction.

Investigators did not immediately disclose the details of the alleged robberies, but sources familiar with the case indicated that the matters are already before the Garissa Law Courts and had reached a critical stage before the suspect failed to attend court.

The arrest followed days of surveillance and intelligence gathering by detectives, who reportedly monitored the suspect’s movements before moving in to apprehend him.

Police said the suspect offered no resistance during the arrest and was subsequently taken into custody pending his appearance before court.

“He is expected to be arraigned to answer to the robbery with violence charges and to explain his failure to honour court summons,” the DCI said.

The agency reiterated its commitment to pursuing suspects who attempt to evade the criminal justice system, warning that absconding court proceedings only compounds legal challenges for accused persons.

“The Directorate of Criminal Investigations remains steadfast in ensuring that individuals who seek to evade the criminal justice system are trailed, apprehended and presented before the courts to answer for their alleged offences,” the statement added.

The arrest comes amid renewed efforts by law enforcement agencies to track down fugitives and enforce court warrants across the country as part of broader measures to strengthen accountability within the criminal justice system.

Police have also urged members of the public to continue sharing information that could assist in locating wanted persons, noting that community cooperation remains vital in supporting investigations and ensuring that justice is served.

Dagane remains in custody and is expected to appear before the Garissa Law Courts on July 9, 2026, where further directions on his cases are expected to be issued.
