Government Disburses Sh 9.46 Billion in HELB Loans to Over 309,000 University Students

The Ministry of Education has announced the disbursement of Sh 9.46 billion in financial support to more than 309,000 university students across the country through the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB).

In a statement, Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba said the funds had been released to support students’ tuition and upkeep, easing the financial burden on learners and their families.

“We are pleased to notify parents, guardians and university students that the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) has, as of today, disbursed a total of Sh 9.46 billion in financial support to 309,178 university students,” Ogamba said.

According to the ministry, Sh 5.76 billion of the amount has been allocated towards tuition fees, while Sh 3.7 billion has been disbursed for student upkeep.

The Cabinet Secretary urged beneficiaries to verify the status of their loans through the HELB portal and access information regarding their individual accounts.

“Students are advised to check their HELB portals to confirm receipt of the funds and to access detailed information regarding their individual HELB loan accounts,” he stated.

The latest disbursement comes as thousands of students continue to rely on government funding to pursue higher education amid rising economic challenges.

Ogamba reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring that deserving students have access to university education regardless of their financial background.

“The Government will continue to provide the requisite funding to ensure that higher education remains accessible and affordable and that no student is left behind on account of financial limitations,” he said.

The announcement is expected to bring relief to students and institutions that have been awaiting the release of HELB funds to facilitate learning and meet education-related expenses.
