Hamas to repatriate bodies of seven Israeli soldiers under Gaza ceasefire deal

As part of a new ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas, the bodies of seven Israeli soldiers are expected to be returned from Gaza.

Six of the soldiers were killed during the Hamas-led attack on October 7, 2023, while a seventh is presumed dead due to the absence of any signs of life, according to the Israeli military.

The agreement also includes the expected return of the remains of Staff Sergeant Hadar Goldin, who was killed in the 2014 Gaza war and whose body has been held in Gaza ever since.

Tamir Nimrodi, an 18-year-old Israeli-German soldier, was captured during the October 7 attack while stationed near the Erez border crossing.

Since then, no proof of life has emerged. Unlike other hostages, his name was not mentioned by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during his UN address in September 2024.

Captured alongside Ron Sherman and Nick Beizer both later confirmed dead Nimrodi was seen in a Hamas video at the time of the attack.

His family noted he wasn’t wearing his glasses, meaning he would have had very limited vision.

Described by his mother as “joyful, curious, altruistic, and creative,” Nimrodi was serving in a Defense Ministry unit overseeing civilian affairs in the Palestinian territories.

Sergeant Major Mohammad Alatrash, a 39-year-old member of the IDF’s Bedouin Trackers Unit, was killed in combat near Nahal Oz and his body was taken into Gaza.

His death was officially confirmed by the Israeli military in June 2024.

From the southern Israeli village of Mulada, Alatrash was married to two wives and had 13 children. His youngest child was born just a month before the attack.

Itay Chen, a dual Israeli-American citizen, was stationed near the Gaza border when the Hamas assault began.

He contacted his parents during the initial moments of the attack but was not heard from again.

His death was confirmed in March 2024, five months after the attack, with the army stating he was killed in action and his body taken into Gaza.

Nineteen-year-old Oz Daniel was serving in an armoured unit near Nahal Oz on October 7. He was captured when his tank reportedly suffering from brake issues was overrun.

He appeared in a Hamas video with three other soldiers: Nimrod Cohen (still held alive), Omer Neutra, and Shaked Dahan (both killed).

A music lover who played guitar and admired Guns N’ Roses, Daniel believed in “the power of music to change the world.”

Though his body was not initially recovered, a funeral was held in February 2024 in Kfar Saba, where he lived with his twin sister.

The highest-ranking Israeli officer captured by Hamas, Colonel Assaf Hamami led a brigade responsible for the southern Gaza region. He was killed during the October 7 attacks after sending a message: “It’s war.”

His funeral was held in December 2023, and he was remembered by then-Defense Minister Yoav Gallant as “one of the army’s most capable officers.”

Hamami was married and had three children. The bodies of two soldiers killed alongside him were returned to Israel in July 2024.

Omer Neutra, a 21-year-old dual U.S.-Israeli citizen, was killed on October 7 while serving as a volunteer soldier in the IDF.
He was in the same faulty tank as Oz Daniel, Nimrod Cohen, and Shaked Dahan. Neutra appeared in a Hamas video being captured; for over a year, his family held out hope he was alive until the IDF confirmed his death in December 2024.

Born and raised in New York, Neutra chose to delay college to serve in Israel, following in his parents’ footsteps. His funeral was held in March 2024.
