The race for the 2026 Ballon d’Or has reached its climax, with England captain Harry Kane emerging as the leading contender against
Spanish teenage sensation Lamine Yamal and French superstar Kylian Mbappé ahead of Monday’s prestigious ceremony in London.
Kane is chasing a historic achievement that would make him the first English footballer to win the men’s award since Michael Owen claimed the honour in 2001.
However, his remarkable goalscoring exploits face competition from two of the most influential attacking players in world football.
According to Sky Sports, the Bayern Munich striker enters the ceremony as the bookmakers’ favourite after delivering an extraordinary 2025/26 campaign for club and country.
The Ballon award, presented by France Football, recognises individual performances over the period from August 3, 2025, to July 19, 2026.
This year’s Ballon contest has generated considerable debate over whether consistent goalscoring, major international honours or overall influence on the pitch should carry the greatest weight.
Harry Kane’s remarkable season strengthens his case
Kane has arguably produced the most prolific season of his career since joining German giants Bayern Munich from Tottenham Hotspur in 2023.
The England international scored 61 goals in 51 appearances for Bayern across all competitions during the 2025/26 campaign, while his 36 Bundesliga goals earned him the European Golden Shoe for a second time.
He also contributed 12 goals for England during the qualification period, including six at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, taking his combined tally for club and country to an astonishing 73 goals.
His achievements helped Bayern secure the Bundesliga title and the German Cup, giving him a strong combination of individual statistics and team success.
Bayern also reached the Champions League semi-finals, where they were eliminated by eventual winners Paris Saint-Germain in a closely contested tie that ended 6-5 on aggregate.
Kane’s performances have prompted several football pundits to back him for the award.
Former Liverpool defender and Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher has argued that Kane deserves the Ballon d’Or because of his remarkable scoring record, domestic silverware and contribution to England’s World Cup campaign.
Other pundits, including Paul Merson, Tim Sherwood, Sue Smith and Michael Dawson, have also expressed support for the striker.
A victory would make Kane only the fifth Englishman to win the men’s Ballon d’Or, joining Sir Stanley Matthews, Sir Bobby Charlton, Kevin Keegan and Owen.
It would also represent a major personal milestone for a player who spent much of his early career being judged on his inability to win major trophies.
Lamine Yamal hopes to make history at 19
While Kane has the numbers, Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal has a compelling argument of his own.
The Spain international, who turned 19 in July, has already established himself as one of the most exciting players in world football.
During the 2025/26 club season, Yamal recorded 24 goals and 17 assists in all competitions for Barcelona, giving him 41 goal contributions.
His ability to beat defenders, create chances and influence matches has made him a central figure in Barcelona’s attacking system.
He also helped Barcelona win La Liga and lifted the biggest international prize of all after playing a part in Spain’s World Cup triumph.
Yamal’s international tournament was not as statistically dominant as those of some of his rivals, as he scored once during Spain’s victorious campaign.
He had also been recovering from a hamstring injury sustained towards the end of the club season.
Nevertheless, his performances with Barcelona and his contribution to Spain’s success have strengthened his credentials.
Winning the award would make Yamal the youngest-ever men’s Ballon d’Or winner, adding another extraordinary chapter to a career that has progressed at a remarkable pace.
His challenge is whether voters will consider his overall influence and international success sufficient to overcome Kane’s considerably higher goalscoring numbers.
Yamal has previously maintained that the award should recognise more than simply the number of goals a player scores, a position that reflects the wider debate surrounding football’s most prestigious individual prize.
Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappé is another leading contender, with his goalscoring record giving him a strong claim despite a season without major team trophies.
The French captain scored 42 goals in 44 appearances for Real Madrid across all competitions during the 2025/26 campaign.
His 25 La Liga goals made him the competition’s leading scorer, while his 15 Champions League goals topped the European competition’s scoring charts.
Mbappé also enjoyed a record-breaking World Cup, scoring 10 goals to claim the Golden Boot and becoming the all-time leading goalscorer in men’s World Cup history with 22 goals.
However, Real Madrid exited the Champions League in the quarter-finals, while France finished fourth at the World Cup after losing to England in the third-place play-off.
The absence of major team honours could count against him in a contest where both Kane and Yamal have silverware to strengthen their cases.
Still, Mbappé’s individual achievements underline why he cannot be ruled out.
His ability to deliver goals on the biggest stages has kept him among the leading candidates for football’s highest individual honour.
A victory would also mark his first Ballon d’Or win after years of being considered one of the leading successors to Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
