Pastor Dorcas Rigathi has mounted a spirited defence of her husband, Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua, dismissing claims by his political critics that he lacks intelligence and instead insisting that he remains one of the country’s most influential political figures.
Speaking at the family’s Wamunyoro home in Nyeri County on Thursday, July 31, Dorcas argued that the level of attention Gachagua continues to attract from both allies and opponents proves that he is far from the “brainless” politician some have attempted to portray him as.
Her remarks came amid the escalating political rivalry between President William Ruto and his former deputy.
“He Gives Them Sleepless Nights”
In a passionate speech, the outspoken pastor questioned why Gachagua’s critics constantly discuss him if they truly believe he has no political weight.
“Many people say Gachagua is brainless, yet they don’t sleep. They talk about him, from the smallest to the biggest among them. He gives them sleepless nights. That is not a brainless man. This is a man of God, full of wisdom, knowledge, and God’s favour,” Dorcas declared.
Her remarks drew loud applause from supporters, with many interpreting them as a direct response to recent political attacks directed at the former deputy president.
Dorcas Stands Firmly Behind Her Husband
The pastor has repeatedly defended Gachagua since his dramatic impeachment in October 2024, maintaining that the former deputy president remains a formidable political force despite leaving government.
According to Dorcas, the constant criticism levelled against her husband only demonstrates that his political influence continues to unsettle his rivals ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Her latest remarks have reignited debate over Gachagua’s growing role in opposition politics, especially after months of openly criticising President Ruto’s administration.
Revives Her Response to Kimani Ichung’wah
Dorcas also revisited comments she previously made while responding to Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichung’wah, who had questioned why she frequently accompanies her husband during political engagements and alleged that she influences his decisions.
Drawing from scripture, she defended their close partnership, insisting there is nothing unusual about a husband and wife working together.
“I don’t know why anyone has a problem with a husband moving with his wife. For Jehovah God says they shall become one flesh and they will be with each other and they will not feel ashamed. So, what is wrong with me and my husband?”
She went on to dismiss claims that she controls Gachagua.
“There is nothing wrong with my husband being with me and I with him. When he gives me a chance to speak, he is not giving me a chance because I hear that I sit on him. How can you sit on a man like this? A man who is causing a whole nation not to sleep? A man whom the president, the deputy president and members of parliament can hardly stop talking about. Is that the kind of man you think they describe? You are such liars.”
Her comments sparked laughter from the audience before being followed by cheers from supporters.
Political Temperatures Continue to Rise
Dorcas’ latest defence comes as political tensions continue to intensify between President Ruto’s camp and Gachagua’s allies.
Since his impeachment, Gachagua has remained one of the government’s fiercest critics, regularly accusing the Kenya Kwanza administration of abandoning the promises it made to Kenyans.
His speeches have frequently targeted the president while rallying opposition supporters across the country.
As the battle for political supremacy gathers momentum ahead of 2027, Dorcas has increasingly emerged as one of her husband’s strongest public defenders, using both religious teachings and political messaging to counter attacks against him.
Her latest remarks are likely to fuel fresh political debate, with supporters viewing them as a bold show of loyalty, while critics are expected to dismiss them as part of the intensifying political war between Gachagua and President Ruto.
