Kenyan comedian and activist Eric Omondi has emerged as the highest-paid social media personality in the country, raking in an estimated Sh 57 million in 2025.
His rise to the top highlights a major shift in how fame, influence, and income are being redefined in the digital age.
Omondi’s impressive earnings place him ahead of some of Kenya’s most popular entertainers and influencers, as brands increasingly turn to social media personalities to reach younger, digitally engaged audiences.

Social Media: From Hobby to Goldmine
The figures paint a clear picture of a digital revolution reshaping livelihoods across the country.
What was once dismissed as a waste of time has now become one of the most lucrative career paths.
Today, a young person in a rural village can start posting content online and, within a short period, build a following of over one million people.
With such reach, monthly earnings can easily surpass Sh 300,000, outpacing traditional professions like teaching or nursing.
This transformation underscores how online platforms have unlocked new income streams. When approached strategically, content creation is no longer just entertainment, it is a sustainable business model and a source of passive income.
Government’s Role in Monetisation
Interestingly, Omondi’s success is also tied to broader policy and industry shifts.
Digital strategist Dennis Itumbi recently revealed that the Kenyan government played a role in enabling monetisation opportunities.
Speaking during an interview, Itumbi claimed that President William Ruto personally engaged executives from Meta Platforms to expand earning opportunities for Kenyan creators.
“When this administration took office… a report shows that Eric is earning Sh 57 million and is the highest-earning content creator. His earnings are majorly on Instagram and Facebook. The president personally negotiated with Meta, they even came here for Jamhuri, and monetisation was introduced for Meta products,” Itumbi said.
The move reportedly paved the way for Kenyan creators to earn directly from platforms like Facebook and Instagram, marking a turning point for the local digital economy.

A New Era for Kenyan Creators
Omondi’s rise is symbolic of a broader shift where influence, creativity, and consistency online can translate into real wealth.
As brands continue to invest heavily in digital marketing, influencers are no longer just entertainers, they are key players in Kenya’s economic landscape.
With millions already flowing into the industry, the message is clear: social media is no longer a distraction, it is one of the most powerful wealth-building tools of the modern era.
